We wanted to share this great article by Toronto family law lawyer Nathalie Boutet about the important role that financial planners play in negotiating out-of-court divorce settlements.
We often use financial planners and/or tax specialists for the same reasons Boutet identifies – for example, to give family law clients a long-range view of what the financial aspects of their settlement (spousal support, property division) will look like for them 10 to 20 years from now, so that we can decide together whether the deal makes financial sense for them.
Bringing a financial expert onto the settlement “team” ensures that clients receive the right expertise for their issues, and get the results they are seeking. By working collaboratively with a financial or tax professional, a family law lawyer can often obtain a better and more efficient result for his or her clients. It’s about bringing an element of practicality into the file which, in our experience, most clients appreciate.
